EVENEPOEL AND AFFINI ARE EUROPEAN TIME-TRIAL CHAMPIONS

The Belgian Junior rider Remco Evenepoel and the Under 23 Italian Edoardo Affini today in Brno (Czech Republic) became European Champions in the Time-Trial races.  

The second day of the continental event, which began yesterday with the Women’s races won by the Italian Virginia Guazzini (Junior) and the Dutch rider Aafke Soet (Under 23), opened with the Junior race which confirmed yesterday’s predictions.

On the fast 23 kilometre course (11.5 kilometre circuit covered twice), the Belgian national champion Remco Evenepoel, winner this season of the Corsa della Pace, the Trophée Centre Morbihan and the GP Général Patton, rode the circuit in 29’51” (average 46,230 km/h). He beat his fellow countryman Ilan Van Wilder, who came second in a time of 30’15”, and the Italian Antonio Tiberi who finished in 30’31”.

 

Edoardo Affini triumphed in the Under 23s. Recent winner of the gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in the Time-Trial and Road events and Time-Trial National Champion, the Italian covered the 23 kilometres of the circuit in 29’26” (average 46,890 km/h), in front of the Slovenian Izidor Penko (29’52”) and the Austrian Markus Wildauer, third with a time of 29’58”.

Affini has won the second European title of his career following the one in 2014 in the Junior Road race. 

Tomorrow, Saturday 14 July, the European Championships continue in Zlin with the Women’s Road races: Junior (75.6 km, start at 11 am) and Under 23 (108 km, start at 2.30 pm).
