The 2023 edition of the Track European Championships finished this afternoon at the Tissot Velodrome in Grenchen (Switzerland) with the men’s Madison race.
For five days, the modern Swiss facility was packed to the rafters, demonstrating the high technical level of the continental competition, which was the first qualification event for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Germany came top of the final medals table winning a total of 13 medals (out of the 22 on offer) including 7 golds, 1 silver and 5 bronze, ahead of Great Britain (4, 6, 2) and the Netherlands (4, 1, 5).
The Netherlands and Germany were the leading nations in the Sprint races, both in the Women’s and Men’s, winning all the titles available.
Italy with the Olympic champions Ganna, Lamon, Consonni and Milan, as well as Moro, won in the Men’s Team Pursuit beating Great Britain in the final, who won in the Women’s with Anna Morris, Josie Knight, Neah Evans, Elinor Barker and Katie Archibald, who also achieved a win in the Omnium.
Among the other results worthy of note in the Women’s races were the Portuguese Maria Martin’s victory in the Scratch, the Norwegian Anita Stenberg in the Points Race and the German Franziska Brausse in the Individual Pursuit. In the Men’s, the Team Pursuit Olympic Champion, Simone Consonni (Italy), won the gold medal in the Points Race while his compatriot Jonathan Milan, also gold medallist at Tokyo 2020, won the Individual Pursuit.
On the last day, Katie Archibald and Elinor Barker from Great Britain also took the title in the Madison, a speciality in which the Germans Roger Kluge and Theo Reinhardt repeated their success at Munich 2022.
The UEC Management Board also met at the Elite Track European Championships to unanimously approve all projects in the 2023 Solidarity plan.
Regarding future events, the city of Jönköping (Sweden) was awarded the 2024 and 2025 Youth MTB European Championships (Under 15 and Under 17), the BMX Flatland European Championships will take place on 11 June as part of the Ruhr Games in Bochum (Germany) and the change of venue for rounds 9 and 10 of the 2023 BMX European Cup scheduled in Sakarya (Türkiye) on 10 and 11 June, were approved.
The next edition of the Elite Track Championships will take place in Apeldoorn (Netherlands) from 14 to 18 February 2024.
