The Elite BMX European Champion titles were awarded today in Glasgow BMX Centre. At the end of two days of racing, Laura Smulders (Netherlands) and Kyle Evans (Great Britain) won the continental champion’s jerseys.
In the new and modern venue especially built for the continental event which was also full again today, it was Laura Smulders, reigning world champion and current European champion, who raced to victory in the women’s category ahead of the Dane Simone Christensen and the Russian Yaroslava Bondarenko.
Laura Smulders: «Today I feel really good. I suffered a bit in the heats but yesterday I recovered and tried to improve my performance. I finished with three first places in the heats which helped me mentally. Today I had to try even harder to stay ahead of the other fast girls like Simone Christensen and the Russians. I knew what I had to do: a good start and a fast lap and that’s exactly what I did to win».
The men’s title was won by the Briton Kyle Evans after a closely fought battle against his fellow countryman Kye White and the current world champion the French rider Sylvain André.
Kyle Evans: «Today was the perfect finish of a perfect week. The best international riders were competing and I never thought that I could win; don’t forget that currently in Europe we have the eight best riders in the world. With the team, we knew that we could get a good result and especially because we were competing at home. That’s also why my win and Kye’s second place are even more special.»
