The 2018 European Championships in Glasgow (Great Britain) are speeding ahead. After the Track races, MTB and the Women’s Road race, the Time-Trial races were held today with victories by the reigning champions: Ellen van Dijk and Victor Campenaerts.
On a rainy morning, the current champion Ellen van Dijk (Netherlands) confirmed expectations by winning the women’s race riding the 32.3 kilometres of a difficult circuit at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow Green in 41:39”, two seconds less than her compatriot, the Olympic gold medallist in the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Road race, Anna van der Breggen. Third place went to the German Trixi Worrack at 1:09”.
It is the third consecutive European title for Ellen van Dijk in this speciality. «It is really special to win three consecutive European titles, when I think about it, it’s….incredible. I am very happy. During the race I didn’t know that Anna van der Breggen was so close to me. I felt good and the fact that I caught up some riders who started before me encouraged me a lot. Usually Anna is stronger than me, I had to give everything right to the finish. I only won by two seconds, not much considering that the circuit was 32 kilometres».
The Belgian Victor Campenaerts won the men’s race by only 63 hundreths of a second beating the Spaniard Jonathan Castroviejo. The reigning European champion rode the 45.7 kilometres of the circuit in 53:38”.78 at an average of 51.112 km/h. The German Maximilian Schachmann completed the podium with a time of 54:06”.
This today is the third European Time-Trial title for Campenaerts after the one last year and in 2013 in the Under 23s. «I rightly won, 63 hundreths isn’t much, but it was enough to win it; that’s cycling. I have prepared for a long time for today’s race, it has been one of my objectives since the start of the season. I am very happy because the Elite European Time-Trial Championships have been running for three years now and in all the three editions, with the win today, I have always stepped on the podium with two wins and second place in the first ever edition».
