In the Czech Republic, 42 countries will be battling against each other for the eight titles on offer
Only a few days remain before the start of the 2018 edition of the Junior and Under 23 Road European Championships that will be held from 12 to 15 July in Brno (Time-Trial) and Zlin (Road) in the Czech Republic, the country preparing to host this continental event for the third time following the first edition in1995 in Trutnov and 2013 in Olomouc.
On the closing of registration, 42 countries had signed up with a total of 734 riders, all ready to compete for the eight titles on offer: four in the Time-Trial in Brno (Women Junior and Under 23 on 12 July, the Men the day after) and four for Road in Zlin (Women Saturday 14 July and Men on Sunday 15 July).
The Men Under 23 category features big names from the start of the season from the international scene such as the Dutch rider, Julius Van den Berg, the Belgian, Jasper Philips and the Italian, Edoardo Affini. In the Women’s the favourites are the Italians, Elisa Balsamo and Letizia Paternoster and the German, Lisa Klein. The winners of the 2017 Junior continental titles will be making their debut in this category: the Dutch rider, Lorena Wiebes, first in the Road race last year in Herning (Denmark) and the Italian, Elena Pirrone who, in addition to the Time-Trial European title also won last year the World Championships Road race as well as the Time-Trial.
The Norwegian, Søren Wærenskjold will be one of the favourites in the Juniors with the Czech rider, Karel Vacek, the Italian, Andrea Piccolo and the Belgian, Remco Evenepoel. In the Women’s, Shari Bossuyt (Belgium) and Lonneke Uneken (Netherlands).
Rocco Cattaneo, President of the Union Européeenne de Cyclisme: «The Road European Championships in the Junior and Under 23 categories have always been a key event and will be an opportunity to get to know the women and men that will be in the pages of the cycling news throughout the next few seasons. We should not forget that in the past in the youth category, famous riders won European Champion titles such as Giovanni Visconti, Marcel Kittel, Stefan Kung, Marianne Vos and Anna van der Breggen. This event is also a great occasion to promote the region and we are certain that the 700 plus riders from all over Europe will enjoy a unique experience.
