The 2018 BMX European Cup ended last weekend with races in Blegny (Belgium).
6,294 riders competed in the eight races organised (Verona – Ita, Zolder – Bel, Kampen – Ned and Blegny – Bel), demonstrating that this discipline is more popular than ever with teams and National Federations.
The 2018 UEC BMX European Cup has been a huge success especially in terms of visibility. The eight races organised were broadcast in full by direct streaming with a total of 171,848 views in 141 countries.
On a sporting level, the podium of the Elite category final ranking was dominated by the Dutch with Joris Harmsen in first place ahead of Niek Kimmann and Twan Van Gendt. The Netherlands also dominated the Women Elite category following the victory of Laura Smulders and in second place Judy Baauw, followed by the Belgian Elke Vanhoof who came third. The French rider Leo Garoyan and the Swiss Zoe Claessens won their races in the Junior category.
Rocco Cattaneo, Union Européenne de Cyclisme President: «This year, the BMX European Cup is one of our most prestigious events. We have always believed that BMX has a huge potential for growth and this is why this season we have focused in particular on this event giving it its own graphics identity and by developing the broadcasting of races by live streaming. This is a good decision not just because of the total number of views but also due to the great interest from non-European countries proving that the BMX European Cup has an even bigger potential for growth.
I would like to thank in particular the organisers of the eight races, the riders, teams and National Federations and the UEC BMX Commission which is already working on the organisation of the next edition».
