Today the Union Européenne de Cyclisme has elected its leaders for the next four years at the Ordinary General Assembly held in Brussels (Belgium) which was attended by representatives from all the 50 European National Federations.
David Lappartient, the outgoing President and the only candidate put forward for this post was re-elected by acclamation as head of the Continental Confederation, whereas the elected members of the Management Committee are the following: Sahib ALAKBAROV (Azerbaijan), Henrik Jess JENSEN (Denmark), Martin WOLF (Germany), Agata LANG (Poland), Alexander GUSYATNIKOV (Russia), Rocco CATTANEO (Switzerland). At the first Management Board this afternoon, Agata Lang (Poland), Rocco Cattaneo (Switzerland) and Alexander Gusyatnikov (Russia) were appointed as Vice-Presidents whereas the Secretary General Enrico Della Casa (Italy) was reappointed.
The European candidates for the UCI Management Committee and the fifteen voting delegates for the UCI Congress on 21 September as well as the two UEC account auditors were appointed at the electoral Congress which was also attended by the UCI President, Brian Cookson, who in his speech highlighted the importance of the European movement within World Cycling.
The Frenchman from Sarzeau (Britanny), who will celebrate his 44th birthday on 31 May, David Lappartient addressed the assembly straight after his re-election: «You have just re-elected me as head of the Union Européenne de Cyclisme and I would like to sincerely thank you. I am aware of the responsibility you have once again entrusted to me and I will try to be worthy of your trust as I did during my last mandate.
You have expressed your wish to continue with the modernisation of the Union Européenne de Cyclisme. The project ‘Together for European Cycling’ which I am pleased to lead is one of my most important commitments. It signals our intention to promote European cycling and its excellence.
This electoral project which became a mandate project was fully respected. 2016 was a year in which the Union Européenne de Cyclisme continued its development thanks to the introduction of the Elite Road European Championships which filled a gap, with Cyclo-Cross and with the Eurovision agreement to broadcast live the Elite European Championships in 5 disciplines, in 80 countries from 5 continents until 2021.
We would also like to highlight the Union Européenne de Cyclisme’s direct involvement in the first edition of the 2015 European Games in Baku, the implementation of the mandatory wearing of the European champion’s jersey during races and the modernisation of our Confederation’s visibility with the general public.
With regards to the future, this year the Union Européenne de Cyclisme will be working together with the European Olympic Committee to help organise the Games of the Small States of Europe that will take place in San Marino and in 2018 we will also be involved in the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow (Great Britain) with our four Olympic disciplines: a major event that groups together the European Championships with seven sports in two weeks: swimming, athletics, cycling, golf, gymnastics, triathlon and rowing.
We also contributed to the fight against technological fraud lead by the International Cycling Union (UCI), being aware that there are still important actions to develop such as X-ray technology I would like to thank the UCI President, Brian Cookson for the actions he has taken to guarantee our sport’s credibility.
The Union Européenne de Cyclisme has a wealth of projects and especially the development of our European Championships in Glasgow in 2018 and to ensure that the 2019 European Games are a success as well as remaining at the service of our National Federations . Our Confederation is looking to the future but it has not forgotten the past, its history and values whose heritage is our federations, clubs and their leaders.”
At the Congress, France was awarded 2016 European Nations Champion and awards were also given to the leaders who have made a special contribution to cycling: Madis Lepajoe (Estonia), Umberto Langellotti (Monaco), Jack Watson (Ireland), Edouard Carol Novak (Romania) and Slavomir Svoboda (Czech Republic).
The next UEC Congress will be held in Istanbul (Turkey) on 3-4 March 2018.
