The 2022 edition of the Road European Championships in Anadia (Portugal) in the Juniors and Under 23 categories finished today with a win by Felix Engelhardt (Germany). 453 athletes from 33 countries took part.
The continental event, which followed the MTB European Championships and will continue next week with the Track races, began with the Time-Trial races and wins by the Juniors Mathieu Kockelmann (Luxembourg) and Justyna Czapla (Germany).
In the Men’s Under 23, the Belgian Alec Segaert rode to victory, after winning the continental title last years in the Juniors. He beat the Croat Fran Miholjević and the French rider Eddy Le Huitouze. In the Women’s, the current Cyclo-Cross European Champion Shirin van Anrooij (Netherlands) took the title beating the Italian Vittoria Guazzini and Marie Le Net (France).
During the Anadia Championships, the Mixed Relay titles were also awarded. They were won by Italy in the Juniors (Valentina Zanzi, Alice Toniolli, Alessandro Cattani and Nicolas Milesi) ahead of Germany by 3 seconds and Estonia by 42’’, meanwhile the German quartet (Maurice Ballerstedt, Tobias Buck-Gramcko, Ricarda Bauernfeind and Lina Riedmann) dominated the Under 23s race beating Switzerland by 1’16’’ and the Netherlands by 1’49’’.
After winning the silver medal in the Time-Trial two days before, the French Junior Eglantine Reyer took the European jersey in the Juniors Road race beating the Italians Eleonora Ciabocco and Federica Venturelli in a close fought sprint.
The Cyclo-Cross Champion, the Swiss Jan Christen won the European title with a superb solo performance in the final stages of the race, crossing the line 19’’ ahead of the Norwegian Jørgen Nordhagen, who together launched a final decisive attack, and 2’02’’ in front of the French rider Léo Bisiaux.
The Road European Championships in Anadia finished on Sunday with two races in the Under 23 category.
Following her title in the Time-Trial last Thursday, Shirin van Anrooij (Netherlands) also triumphed in the Road race. Thanks to a solo attack in the final stages of the race, the strong Dutch rider won with an 11’’ gap over the first group of chasers and the sprint was won by Vittoria Guazzini, already second in the Time-Trial just behind Van Anrooij, beating Fem van Empel (Netherlands) who took the bronze medal.
In the Men’s, the race was decided when Erik Fetter (Hungary), Davide De Pretto (Italy), Felix Engelhardt (Germany) and Mathias Vacek (Czech Republic) left the peloton behind two laps from the finish. The leaders quickly went ahead of the rest of the group which nonetheless managed to considerably reduce the gap in the last few kilometres. In the difficult final stages, the four leading men managed to maintain a slight advance over the peloton and the four-man sprint was won by Engelhardt beating Vacek and De Pretto.
