The UEC Road European Championships began today with the first Time-Trials in Trento (Italy). They will finish on Sunday 12 September with the Men’s Elite Road race and a total of 13 continental titles will be awarded over the five days of racing.
On the first day, Italy won the title in the Mixed Relay dominating the race first with Filippo Ganna, Mattia Sobrero and Alessandro De Marchi then, Elena Cecchini, Marta Cavalli and Elisa Longo Borghini. The Italian team remained in the lead right from the start and constantly kept ahead of Germany and the Netherlands at each intermediary time on the 44.8 km circuit (22.4 kilometres for each lap), finishing the race in 51’59” at an average speed of 51.710 km/h.
Germany came second (winner last year in France in Plouay) with Miguel Heidemann, Justin Wolf, Max Walscheid, Corinna Lechner, Mieke Kroger and Tanja Erath (52’20”); third place for the Netherlands (Koen Bouwman, Jos Van Emdem, Bauke Mollema, Floortje Mackaij, Amy Pieters and Demi Vollering) with a time of 52’25”.
The opening day started with a Women’s Juniors Time-Trial dominated by Alina Ivanchenko.The strong Russian athlete, winner over the last three weeks of World and European titles in the Points race on the track, raced the 22.4 kilometres of the totally flat circuit in 29’11” at an average of 46,030 km/h, beating by 31” the German Antonia Niedermaier (29’43”) and the current European Champion Elise Uijen (Netherlands) who finished third with a time of 30’05”.
Belgian double success in the Men’s Juniors with Alec Segaert winner ahead of his compatriot Cian Uijdtebroeks. Segaert won with a time of 26’26” (average 50.830 km/h) meanwhile Uijdtebroeks finished the race in 26’31”; bronze medal for the French rider Eddy Le Huitouze with a time of 27’06”.
Tomorrow is the second day of the 2021 UEC European Championships in Trento with Time-Trial races in the Men’s and Women’s Elite and Under 23 categories.
